(1920-2006)
My father Madan Mohan Gupta was a Tamrapatra holder (a bronze plaque, awarded by Govt. of India to honour freedom fighters) freedom fighter who in his youth actively participated in India’s freedom movement and was jailed and subjected to the atrocities of British Raj. After passing his Matriculation examination from Sheohar High School in 1938, he obtained his degrees in Sahitya Bhushan and Sahitya Visharad from the then Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi. He was a prominent literary personality of his time and has authored many Hindi literature books. He was a poet by heart and frequently wrote and participated in numerous All India Radio broadcasting programs. He was also a Journalist and reported for Bihar based newspapers such as The Aryavarta, The Indian Nation and The Searchlight. He was gifted with multiple skills of directing hindi theater dramas, playing musical instruments such as tabla, harmonium etc. He established ‘Bhartendu Natya Parishad’ and led this institution during his life time. He was very well regarded in the contemporary intellectual circles in the Bihar State and worked with prominent personalities of the time such as shiv Pujan Shahaya, Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Radha Krishna Prasad, Ram Briksha Benipuri, Chhabi Nath Pandey, Acharya Janki Ballabh Shashtri etc. He was involved in lead roles in many socio cultural organizations such as Bihar Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, Bihar Library Association, All India Rauniyar Vaishya Sabha.
Some of the books written by my father:
Growing up I always looked up to my father. He embodied qualities that inspired me deeply-kindness, hunger to learn more, unwavering determination and stand up for the right cause have been the constant source of motivation for me.
My mother Savitri Gupta is a home maker. She has been a great source of providing me motivation and courage to dream for higher education and career. She sacrificed and supported me even in our hard times with single objective that her children must be well educated.
One of the most impactful moments was when my family was undergoing financial hardships, she gave me her jewellery and asked me to give it as pawn to her friend in her neighborhood to fund my college admission fees.
My wife Sudha and myself got married in 1975 at the age of 21 and 22 respectively and since then we are happily married for almost 50 years now. Throughout my adult life so far, she has stood by my side with her unwavering love and support both in good and challenging times. Her selflessness, the sacrifices she has made and the way she patiently tolerates all my flaws always reminds me how truly blessed I am.I owe so much of who I am today to her strength, kindness and endless love. She is the heart of our home and thank you for always believing in me, even when times are tough.
From left my daughter-Keerti, her daughter-Jia,my son Vivek, my wife Sudha,my daughter in law Simran and grand son Arjan and myself.
Keerti did her high school from Loreto Covent in Delhi Cantt. and Diploma in Hotel Management from Institute of Hotel Management(IHM), Chennai both in India before she migrated to Canada. She graduated with Bachelors in Human Resources from York University in Canada. She is a certified Human Resource Leader (CHRL) and fellow member of the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario, Canada. Currently She works with Transport Canada in a senior role for development of Govt policies. In her prior assignments, she worked in managerial positions in various departments of Federal Govt of Canada including Canada Border Services Agency, Correctional services for 12+ years.
Keeerti lives in Ottawa and has a 7 years old daughter Jia Gupta.
Vivek had her schooling at Delhi Public School, RK Puram, New Delhi in India before he migrated to Canada. He graduated from Trent University in Canada in Information Technology and later earned his MBA from University of western Ontario in Canada. He specializes in Human Resources related IT system domains.
Vivek worked for Accenture in Canada and later in USA with IBM, Workforce and SAP America. Currently he works for a global IT corporation and is based in San Jose in California, USA. He is married to Simran Ghai and have a 9 year son Arjan Gupta.
I had the opportunity to be associated with Bachendri while she was working with Tata Steel at Jamshedpur, and together, as a team member, I participated in many hiking, trekking, and mountaineering expeditions led by her.
I made conscious efforts to imbibe her invaluable life teachings that shaped my personality to a great extent. She has a unique aura around her. She has dedicated her life to leadership and teamwork, breaking stereotypes, perseverance in adversity, the empowerment of others, and more. Her life is a testament to the power of dreams and determination.
One thing among many that I emulate from her is her simplicity and humility. I try to inculcate them in my daily life that keep me grounded, and connected to my roots and values.
(1920-2011)
My father-in-law, a career public service officer from Indian Broadcasting Service, was a self-made man, taught me that with dedication, hard work, and patience, we can overcome hardships and achieve our dreams despite limited resources.
He retired as Station Director-All India Radio and had a distinguished and respected career for more than four decades and contributed a lot to the growth and expansion of Indian Radio and Television from its infancy to its maturity.
He was a prolific reader and has authored 25+ books in various facets of Hindi literature.
Read MoreMy brother-in-law, who was instrumental in motivating and inspiring me to migrate to Canada in 1999, quitting a decent job in India. He has a long career of 40+ years in international banking, insurance, and related financial services. He migrated to Canada in 1980 and is an excellent example of building a second career in Canada, primarily by upgrading his skills and credentials. He embraced everything necessary not only to integrate himself and his family but also to thrive in his professional career. He holds an MBA and numerous Canadian credentials and certifications. In his retirement, he actively volunteers as the Vice President of Unionville Tennis Club, serves on various committees for the City of Markham, Ontario, and mentors new immigrants to Canada.
I have absorbed many of Arun’s qualities, which have shaped who I am today in Canada. He is my go-to person for any guidance and advice for my family and our extended family in Canada and the USA.
